Wil nie die December beplanning draad kaap nie, dus plaas ek hierdie storie op n nuwe pos, maar dit gaan oor my avontuur inni Drakenberg

That mud pool I mentioned, There is a a tale about that, worth the telling.... now that I cast my mind back...

Now that mud pool must have been about 10-12m long... A good 15 steps..... With a cliff on the Left and a bit of flat ground on the right, (where the overturned farm trailer was) then a steep fall off, not enough space to safely go off on the side, especially on wet grass...

Now it’s freezing cold, low level clouds / misty, “mot” reen and windy... So after undressing & walking through and back again, I’d hardly got back to my side and a brand-new Nissan Navara <they had just come onto the market at that time> arrives on the other side.

There I am the one side.... Wet, teeth chattering, cold, and mud up to half way up my legs <but the bottom was solid, that’s what I needed to establish from my walk through.... Was it still firm under the mud & water?>

And this dude get’s out... lekker tekkies denim’s and a thick jacket.... and stands there looking at the hindernis....

Then he shouts at me, “dink ek sal dit maak”

So now..... That’s not a question you can simply answer, in the cold, wet, amper kaalgat, full of mud and shouting at each other.....

So I walk BACK through the mud to the other side..... Groet en al daai niceties

So he asks.... Dink jy ek  sal deurkom?

Have you got 4 wheel drive? I ask.....

JA.... Se hy ommidelik..... Factory fitted pronk hy....

I think so, I’ve just walked it and the bottom’s firm.....

Sit hy nou daar en wag..... Het nie n clue wat om te doen...

Se ek nou verder......

I would go back a bit, engage 4 wheel drive then get into second gear, speed not too fast but enough to give you momentum and keep your revs up but speed constant.....

I think he wanted me to do it, but I was caked in mud, mostly kaalgat, freezing and shivering, and his brand new Navara bakkie so he thought twice about that.....

Anyhow he does exactly what I told him, got into the mud and............

Jjust spun round....

So I walk back into the mud (4th time now) up to him in his nice and warm kajuit....

Did you engage 4 wheel?..

Yes............

But where is the transfer / low range leaver?..... I ask through chattering teeth....

Jaaaaa-neee.............. Moerse verskil tussen diff- lock and 4 wheel drive....

With 4 wheel drive you have traction on the front axle so it will pull and keep the car straight...ish  With diff lock it’s only the back axel driving so when the front goes sideway’s... well you just keep going where the bonnet is....

So what now?

Nou is ek die hell in...

So I get lekker kort with the fella and say, if you knew the difference and told me diff lock I would slung a tow belt & rope and dragged you through at low speed...

I coulden’t just walk off and leave him there.... His nice tekkies would get muddy.....

And that’s what I did, hooked up my 6m sling to a 3m sling all of that to a long rope I keep, and  slowly (just to keep him going straight) pulled him through while he kept power on his back wheels.....

What that was about 5 times into the mud, kaalgat, freezing cold, teeth chattering, manhood all but completely disapeared, he <gingerly> helps me pack up, says goodbye and drives off into the mist, and I’m trying to deal with getting clean so that I can get back in the car.....

NEXT TIME.....

Think I’ll make it?

Haven’t a cooking clue!!! And drive verby......

LESSON LEARN'T !

Update: -

All blooming day I’ve been going through the archives in the memory banks of my shrivelled brain, and eventually went to Google earth....

If ever there was countryside to see, it’s there...

As I remember, that trip from R103, some way before before Nottingham road, I branched off to Elandskop....

Then there was the massive cloudburst - rainstorm, Literally could not see ahead I stopped and waited it out, then drove on, once it stopped.

Took the Mpofana road to the lower Lheni road then followed that to Stepmore- Himville –Underberg

Not much on paper... but what an epic trip....

Go Google and see the country / terrain...

Seems fitting then, that after the 10 passes I complete the trip from the other side............ Rhodes – Maclear – Mount Fletcher – Kokstadt – Underberg

THAT WOULD BE AWSOME.....

What a shakedown for my 1 person camper project......
