Power hungry NL 90L fridge freezer?

Greetings to everyone at Kampforum.

I presume that this topic may have been covered in previous threads, but please bear with me.

I'm in need of advice from seasoned campers, please. I used to camp with a NL double door 110L fridge freezer combo. It worked lik a dream and seemed to be relatively power efficient. I sold my old camping trailer and the 110 went with, as my new trailer can only accommodate the NL 90L. Purchased a new NL90 in june and have enjoyed camping in our new Moremi Max.

However, the new 90 seems to be more power hungry than the old 110, also, the temperature is constantly "hunting" or changing on the led read-out. The happens even when we don't open the fridge for an hour or more, and the unit is pulled out on the slider and is in the shade. I didn't notice that my 110 ever behaved like that, is the constant temprerature fluctuation is normal for the NL 90L?

I look forward to members giving me their two cents worth.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Hello Jeremy, we use two NL's, a single 55l and a dual 72l with our Kavango.

It seems that the hunting behaviour is normal. As an example, when I set the freezer to -20C, it will run constantly till it reach -20 or even -21C. Then it will stop the cooling process and the display will immediately indicates how the temperature start rise to approximately -15C. Then the cooling process repeats, and the display indicates the temp. as it drop to -20C.

If that is the hunting you referred to, then it is normal.

On the unit is a "turbo" button for rapid cooling, During this phase the compressor is locked in high speed operation. That may use some extra power. Ensure that once your stuff is cold or frozen, to switch the turbo off.

Furthermore, check if the green LED run indicator is off after the set temp, is reached. As long as it stays off during the gradual warm up period, and only turn on when cooling starts again, it is not hunting.

Keep in mind that even in the shade, with ambient temperature above 36C, the NL's just work harder to maintain low temperature. I run mine at -15C and +4C to prevent excessive power usage.

Hello Wessel,

Thanks for your reply, it seems like I'm concerned for no good reason. I'll have to check of the green this weekend when I take the Moremi out for charge and breather. I also run my NL on the same temp settings.

Cheers, happy camping,

Jeremy

Good morning, Wessel,

We went camping at ElandsKloof near Dullstroom and the NL worked well.

I did set the freezer temp to only -10C, as the weather was not too hot and we didn't have much in the freezer. this seems to help a lot, as the unit didn't seem to work as much. I think that I'll use -10C and 4C from now on, especially if it's not too hot. -10C Is ample cold enough for frozen meat for a week or so.

What I realise that I do need is an additional loose solar panel to help keep the battery topped up when camping without power and the roof solar panel won't get sunlight all day.

Any recommendations, Wessel? I haven't yet checked for a thread regarding this, but I'm sure it has been covered?

Cheers,

Jeremy
