2. BVM is die bruto, gelaaide gewig of maksimun gewig toelaatbaar volgens wet.

You are, of course right. GVM is what counts at the dreaded weigh-bridge....

BUT..............

Is there not a case for upping the Tarra, to make it more realistic, to include tent / water-tank / gas bottles and so on?

Then, the GVM - Tarra will reflect more accurately what the caravan can bear in terms of LOADING?

Would it not put pressure on manufacturers to supply adequate chassies / tyres / brakes ETC? for a van that still has to carry tent gas bottles blah-blah-blah

Our "favorite" manufacturer has always registered the absolute minimum Tare, to make the LOADING look impressive, and I personally believe to get away with supplying vans cheaper.

Yes good and well, but once you put in the necessities like tent / gas bottles battery ETC does not leave much for groceries clothing and the odd plaything...

PERHAPS... Caravans should be so constructed so as to be able to fit a OE (original equipment) towbar for a Ventertjie, then what's actually an under-specified Tarre would not be a problem

Warren, my Penta, if I remember correctly, was first registered with a Tare of 1160Kg and GVM of 1360Kg (something like that). When I went through the whole process of correcting the weights, the tare, I could change at the local licensing office,  but to increase the  GVM I needed a letter on a letter head from JCI, ststing that the van could safely be upgraded to the new GVM.

To me, it works like this, my Karet trailer has a tare of 220Kg, and a GVM of 650 Kg, giving me a payload of  430Kg. Now, if I wanted to increase my pay load, what reason would I need to chage the Tare?

No, It’s not going to help you to increase your payload, It’s going to work against you.

It’s a question of pulling the wool over eyes.

Let’s workshop this.

Along comes a customer and spot’s a van and asks the question what weight can I load in the van

CUSTOMER’S PERCEPTION: -

Groceries / clothing / aircon / toiletries / braai-stuff / cooking stuff / pot’s pans / and wife’s cosmetics...

SALESMAN’S PERCEPTION

Well you can load the difference between the Tarre & the GVM (and he is not wrong)

However, what he does not say is that after you have added gas bottles / battery / tent / side tent / cutlery (Jurgen’s have excluded even that) Tent pegs / hammer/ on-board water and everything else, that comes standard with the van you are left with choosing between 2 T shirts,  2 dozen eggs, and a pocket of potatoes or the wife’s cosmetic’s

Now the point is, would the customer have bought the van in the first place????

If, however the tarre was specified to include all the things that go with the van, then the customer would be correctly informed as to what he legally can and can’t do, and probably would not have made that specific purchase.

So, to get over the problem of Groceries / clothing / aircon / toiletries / braai-stuff / cooking stuff / pot’s pans / wife’s cosmetics AND  the tent / rally tent / gas bottles / battery / on-board water and so on, the manufacturer would have to design the van accordingly, which will cost more.

Ok say you, but then the customer walks away from the sale, to perhaps consider buying a second hand unit because they cost too much....
