For us that pack a backpack & go hiking

So this I find very useful.

It is a gas-canister calculator.

https://mercatorgear.com…

If you use gas as your primary fuel source to cook and so on, it helps you to decide what size & weight canister to pack, bearing in mind, that when you carry everything, weight is a very high priority.

Using this as a guide, you have the ability to choose the smallest (and lightest) canister for your planned hike !

But one needs to take care to not be too “thin”, especially as excluding bleed-out & oxygen starvation, The survival triage is:

1) Shelter & warmth

2) Water

3) Food

(In this order) so it is prudent to add 1 day to your plan & at least 20 % reserve. (add the reserve quantity to the amount of gas).

I kinda know my usage, so it was really nice to know that the one 90g canister I bought for a planned one-day hike (+ 1 day safety) and an estimated 2,5L of BOILING (water & cooking of hydrated food) is sufficient.

Back to the survival Triage.... as heat & shelter are so high on the list, It makes good practice that yu have at least one redundancy to generate heat.

My redundancy (backup) is my spirit burner.... after that I use solid fuel tabs...

Never be complacent and think there will always be organic fuel to create heat... To many improbable can wipe that alternative out, eg  severe rain, or just plain there is actually nothing lying around / not dry enough....

Does that gas calculator also compensate for height above sea level?

I wonder which of the 3 types of stoves (top, intergrated, remote) are the most effecient.    I know my Cadac Safari uses much more gas to boil water and takes longer than my little cheap Alva cannister table top burner.

On that note....   Am looking to get a remote cannister stove that can take a 20cm pot and also add a foldable wind shelter as part of my "sonder om te sleep" setup.  The Alva, although it works well, is bulky and an odd shape to pack especially in a ammo box.

The "Intergrated is by far the most efficient, and the canister top the least

if you set your parameters and just change the type of stove you can easily see the big difference.

Remote canister cooker...

An option for a remote canister burner for 20cm pot, I would look at the "fire maple" cooker, @ Outdoor @ R650. made in Canada. It has a brilliant footprint and once the pot stand is opened quite a big base.

But this is a micro - cooker. A wind shield is then not a problem, as you can buy them for +- R200, again @ Outdoor.

Bigger than that, (Like a Cadac cooker-plate size, or  the Alva one), The closest one I've come across is the "Cadac bosveldt cooker" system.

Essentially a disposable cannister set up, there is a seperate pipe that you can geat as an accessory that couples into the standard gas bottles.

Apart fom that,  the only ones I've seen have been self made, using the Cooker plate as a basis...
