WIKI:  "This fort was constructed at a total cost of GBP £50,000. It was handed over to the Government on 18 January 1898. It was supplied with a paraffin engine powered generator for electricity, a telephone and telegraphic links. Running water was supplied from a pump station in the Fountains Valley which was shared with the nearby Fort Schanskop."

This locomotive was built in 1897 by Neilson and Co. as works no 5131.

During the Anglo-Boer War it was used by the Imperial Military Railways from 1899 to 1902 for carrying British troops and supplies to Pretoria."

Wiki:  "Overlooking the strategic Algoa bay Fort Frederick was built in 1799 on a natural vantage point. Named after Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, commander-in-chief of the British Army, it was built by troops sent to Algoa Bay to prevent a possible landing of French troops, under Napoleon"

Hi Anton,

Dankie weereens.

There are the remains of a Boer fort uptop the koppie near Uncle Charlie's in the South of JHB.

I had my first house built nearby, and used to go up there quite often scrounging round for the rubbish hole that must have been dug nearby.

I reckoned if I could find it, I may have found something interesting.

Although the fort is in ruins, One can still make out the structure (built from the stones lying there) and can even see the gunports, cloesd down on the outside of the wall but much wider on the inside of the wall to give a better arc of fire.

I'm told that that fort was in line of site with the fort at Walkerville, and signalling was done at night by fire and a blanket.

Although I've never actually seen the fort at Walkerville, I have found the odd doppie in the area, and again I was told that the Walkerville fort was set up to monitor the British blockhouse nearby.

Just today I had to go to Meyerton and passed by the Blockhouse, and ironically, all of this came to mind.

Does anybody know anything else about the fort near Southgate / Uncle Charlie's?

Thanks ItlDodat.  I tried a bit of a search but couldn't find anything.

Some more about Blockhouses (from southafrica.net)

"On a road trip through South Africa you’ll often come across what looks like someone’s personal castle, standing in a field, or on the outskirts of a Karoo town, or on a hill overlooking the N1 highway between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Some have been rather fancifully custom-designed, like the mini-fort that overlooks the Northern Cape village of Prieska, which was built out of semi-precious tiger’s eye stones. Others are simple constructions of sandbags, wood and corrugated iron – and generally riddled with old bullet holes.

At the turn of the 20th Century, however, these little buildings with gunports were part of the massive blockhouse system built by the British forces during the South African War (formerly known as the Anglo-Boer War).

Lord Kitchener, commander in general of the British Army in South Africa, was having a hard time countering Boer guerrilla tactics in the field. The Boer combatants, armed and mounted and moving in small squads, were hard to track and pin down as they swept through the countryside, causing havoc with the much larger – and slower – British contingents."

So Kitchener had approximately 8000 blockhouses built, with barbed-wire fencing between them, spanning more than 5000 kilometres. Most of the blockhouses were erected near essential railway routes to protect vital supply lines. And they proved to be effective in controlling the Boers’ movements.
