Warren se "hitch-up-guide"

The fruits of the last two Sundays labor... and a 35 year old invention

The story behind the story...
Oooo about 35 years ago, I was camping at Rustenburg kloof... As I recall the road sloped downhill....

Try as he could, met vroulief wat beduie soos a launch controler op die flight-dek van n aircraft carrier, some guy in a Mercedies just could not get his ball under the coupling...

So when he finally got it close enough, he got out, straddled the A frame of his caravan and let the handbrake down to get the van van to move over the ball.....

Well that diddn't work out to well.... That caravan just kept on going and smashed into the back of the Mercedies....

Oooo - eina!

So that got me thinking.... (See Freda........ Alway's making something.....Comes a long way with me)....

Anyhow long story short I invented a hitch-up-guide that helps me to align up the ball directly under the coupling 100 % every time.... From inside the car....

Used it for years-n-years....

Now I posted about this on the forum but I don't know how to post multiple photos..... So I'm continuing the tale here....

Anyhow, having reciently engineered a front hitch for the Landy, I thought it was a good idea to be able to get in, drive up to the trailer, lower the jockeywheel and BINGO! I'm coupled....

So I dragged out my design manual from 35 years ago and made another hitch-up guide....

Total cost? R0.00.... just from stuff I've got knocking about...

Glad nie sleg nie..... <You can all clap hands now>

I'll post comments on the photo's, just click on them....

Sadly, one thing leads to another..... And the tale goes on

Still to follow......... CHAPTER 2.... My portable tree........

Sien!..........Daarsy! as soon as the upright on the car tilts over stop... You are aligned... Not the MIK ontop of the upright on the trailer, that gives you depth perception.... Quite important. The braai in the background is one a scratched out of the steel skip and I'll get round to cutting the grid one day.....

Every time, closer than that you will never get without a rear-view camera. and R3000.00 bucks.... The fitting on the car side is a 30mm wire hose clamp that's been "tuned" so bietjie...

Baie Slim!  Old school...

Thanks guys...

En

dankie virri plasing hier.....

Arie, onthou, dis net ek en Scruffy, and as clever as she is, thats punching a bit above her weight.....

ANOTHER THING THAT LEAD TO ANOTHER THING........

Well having cut and measured and ground and welded that front hitch, At last I can use my portable tree.....

See, for me, there is nothing nicer than stopping along on the side of the road for a half an hour to have a rest / stretch my legs / wipe my gisiggie kick back enjoy the view and have a picnic......

(BTW I’ve even been known to have a roadside shower in my boxer shorts.... But that’s another tale).....

And, if I haven’t cooked a chicken on the engine, then it’s cheeseor sesame seed  buns with cut-up boiled eggs / ham / raw onion / cheese / tomato / komkommer and a healthy shake of Aromat or salt & pepper, and a good size mug of sterk warm boere-troos...

And there I sit in my comfy Oz-trail chair, as the caravans & campers wiz by, usually with a friendly toot-toot and a wave......

Problem is, where there’s a beautiful vista to look out on, there isn’t a blooming tree for miles and miles....

So, I pack my own.....

See, my “portable tree” is one of those huge garden umbrellas that you have to wind open, and it fits into the bracket on the front......

Well, that’s what I thought.... Until I tried it.... And it doesn’t fit......

So .....

The front coupling led to the hitching guide......

The hitching guide let to my portable tree......

AND STILL, NOT ONE BLOOMING THING'S COME OFF MY DECEMBER TODO LIST!

Warren, very smart idea !  In my case I use the Pathfinder's reverse camera and can manage to reverse the tow ball right under the tow hitch without the help of others. However, I always use stop blocks behind the caravan wheels (just in case !) and only remove them after a successful hitch.

Thanks for sharing your idea with photographs which makes understanding much easier.
