Cadac memories...... Good ones........

Just come back from a customer in Booysens...........

Drove past the old, old, Cadac factory.

The furnace chimney is still there, on the pavement, attached to their old building.............

When Cadac was still a damn fine South African brand and good value for money.....

Before they moved to Roodepoort..............

SIGH................

Just a question, because I still have a lot of confidence in Cadac products. It's been quite a few years since I last bought any gas equipment, but the ones I have in my possession are about all Cadac. And when I see their products in shops, I'm still impressed.

I'm not in a position to comment on your last input as my Cadac equipment are probably all of the older type. Although, I do have a relatively new cylinder with which I am very pleased. But I'll take you on your word as you probably have more experience than me on gas equipment.

What happened to the Cadac No. 3 cylinder? I have two of them that I bought 25 years ago at Van Aswegens. Some places don’t want to fill them any more.

I also like the No 3, it’s not space hungry, light & easy to handle & pack away, and it will last long enough for a usual type of holiday. Fact is, you don’t really need 2 of the 7Lb ones, 2 3’s will be way more than enough.

Ok, I don’t have the filling problem there are 2 companies here at work, and in Alberton where I sleep, Die Blou meul will fill as well as another deppo just around the corner.....

But you can actually fill them yourself, just apply a bit of “common sense regards safety” and don’t do it indoors...

Buy 2 butterfly connectors that screw in at the top of the cylinder (about R80 EA) connect them with a piece of hose, screw one connector into the No 3 and the other into a full cylinder.

Open the No 3 with the key then open the full one, the gas will go into the number 3 until the pressure equalises... ok, it won’t be 100 % full but it will be pretty darn full... doing this repeatedly eventually it won’t work as the pressure will get less and less with each filling..

Then you just re-fill the big one...

when Cadac was Cadac.....

I have no problem with the South African designed Cadac equipment manufactured in China  -  as far as I am concerned, still excellent products.

Chinese junk : yes, some products are junk, however, a wide range of Chinese products are excellent products at affordable prices.

Jozie, I removed the 2 No. 10 bottles in the nose cone and replaced them with one No. 3. It lasts for when there is a power failure and we have to have a shower. We fill it every 2 months. The other No. 3 has the kooker head and is portable for anywhere cooking.

I have filled them with a 9kg bottle upside down and a kitchen digital scale. Works fine. I made a pipe link as you explained.

The two No. 3’s are more than sufficient for in between filling periods.

Dit word beskou as 'n veiligheisrisiko.

Paul: Gekoop by Van Aswegens. Dit was darem 'n winkel van gehalte, baba en kinder-goete ook aangehou.

Color denotes year of manufacturer, and sometimes if you paint them yourself, they also won't fill them.

That I kinda agree with.... Some people are totally unethical, they got a really scrappy bottle, they know based on appearance alone they will decline to fill, so they paint them and sell them to unsuspecting (mostly black) people at flea markets who then pay R250 - 350 and sit with a usless thing.....

That is just so wrong.... It's OK if you got bucks, but to scam poor people makes my blod boil...

My dad had a bicycle shop/pawnshop/petshop when I was in High school and  we used to fill the small gas cylinders. On a stand was one of the big gas bottles in an upside down position, about 1/2 a meter from the ground. There was this butterfly connection to the small cylinder. The nut you see on the side of Warrens bottle was opened and then the big bottle valve untill the gas liquid started coming from the nut, which is a vent screw. Both closed and your cylinder the correct weight. This was done in an open yard, maybe a little too risky for today's regulations. Btw, my biggest perk was, I had to ride all the newest model bicycles to school, from Dhc racing bikes to the choppers. He once built a 3 speed Sturmy Archer hub into a 10 speed racing bike, so evectivly it had 30 gears. Dad's marketing

Yes the colour depicts the model age. It is on this basis that the reputable refill places won’t refill. My one No 3 was light blue, 1965 model and they would not refill it. They said the cylinder rusts on the inside and becomes too thin.

The agreed to test the wall thickness and found it to be ok. They then refilled it.

Camouflaging a lethal problem and then selling it is criminal. But unfortunately most SA’s don’t care as long as they can make a buck.

My current two No. 3’s are dark blue 1995 models. The gas valve leaver fits into the plastic carry handle. I Also have another one dark blue with a steel handle and the lever is stored separately. That one was a gift 🎁

Lekker kamp.
