Arie, moet nou nie laat ek jou geheime hier uitlaat nie.

I made a half-serious joke about a vehicle & a driver..... Half serious because: - At the end of the day, the most important emergency item is you, your knowledge and abilities, as well as a reliable well maintained vehicle.

I may be focused on a whole different level of emergency than the original poster intended, but anyhow, I think there is perhaps a few things of value that could come out of this post....

far more seriously than the odd thing that's going to make your life a little difficult i you "left them behind" , I'm focusing on a much more urgent and perhaps life- threatening situation.

So, number 1....

GET

YOURSELF

KNOWLEDGABLE

OPEN YOUR MIND TO: - Emergency may not be just about you... It might be related to your child or wife....

There are many things that can be made to do the job in an emergency.... EG, a shoelace and a small stick can supplement for a tourniquet if you know, how to apply a tourniquet (It has to be released periodically and the frequency & timing depends on how long it's been applied) & you have to have the mindset in an emergency to think of that as an alternative.

Learn how to give CPR.... Especially if you have heart conditions.... Things have changed

C    B   A........ Don’t waste time trying to open airway,  get blood to circulate

Chest compressions First

Breathing    Next

 Airway        Next

Obviously, a reliable vehicle is paramount. NEVER LEAVE THE VEHICLE. It will be your shelter, and provider of just about anything you will need to survive

Look at this list..... The survival triage...

Number 1 – You will survive minutes: - severe bleeding / icy water / heart attack / stop breathing.

Number 2 – You will survive hours: - extreme cold / heat

Number 3 -  You will survive days:  without water

Number 4 – You will survive weeks without food

Based on that pyramid (or triage) what you decide to take with as emergency resources will depend on the perceived environment you are going to encounter. It's a good idea to resource yourself according to the list, for example I would ensure I could stop severe bleeding before I packed 3 tins of baked beans.

Don’t forget to factor in chronic medication such as insulin.

Factor in self defence & where possible a means of communication. From a whistle (with the pea) which can be heard for about 1 – 1,5Km’s, and gives you a much bigger coverage than eyes. through cell-phone, and if really going remote, satellite phones, (They can be hired BTW)

Ok having given the survival Triage a quick way of resolving MOST necessary resources is to get a high quality survival pack. DON’T SKIMP ON THE BUCKS, Get a good one......

That will resource you for many different situations.

The rest is up to you... You and your mindset and knowledge will determine the outcome, and how much other resources you will pack....

so that, fellas, and ladies means, LEARN / READ / PRACTICE... Yeah, hard work & effort. What you put in will determine your chances. Google is a wonderful educator...

Basics? A sharp knife / a pea-whistle / a couple of meters of parachord / something to create fire / space-blanket or two, / tarp (such as an ex army groundsheet) / 1L of water per person per day / some energy bars / some sugar sachets - (for shock) spare specticles / cronic medication / cash, (a fair amount of it).

OK so now you can shout and scream at me.....

0

Now, why would we want to…

Now, why would we want to scream at you??

Hehehehe... More Arrie  'Cause my posts are soooooooooo long?

WARREN, DO YOU HEAR ME😂😂

WARREN, DO YOU HEAR ME😂😂

Nope........... Took both my hearing aids out when I posted!!!!! That's why you can scream alllll you want..... I ain't hearing you.

But there is just one more thing I need to add to the list of basics..... A large, floppy hat. Floppy because the most effective way to cool down a body is to keep your head cool,

A very effective way to do this is to douse or soak it with water.

Speaking of water. DO NOT DRINK water during the heat of the day, you will not derive any benifit as you will just sweat it out. Rather, use the lid of the water-bottle to portion off a small amount, rinse your mouth and swallow. do this from time to time during the heat of the day.

Time for drinking water is well after the temprature has cooled down, about an hour or so after the sun has gone down, then you can consume what's left.

The best waterbottles for personel carry are the millitary type. Do this mod, cut the lussie that joines the lid to the bottle, and use a nappy pin through both ends. Then you can get the lid off easily.

During the bush war era, we used to go out on patrol, 7 days at a stretch, we used to carry 1 bottle / day / person, and there was no way anyone shared.... No matter how "besties" you where with the next dude,

Out of that one bottle, you had enough to drink, cook some sort of grub and do a basic body clean, using the fire-bucket... The fire bucket is a stainless steel container with a folidng handle that the waterbottle goes into, and is used to........ well hold liquids / cook liquids... that sort of thing...

Hahaha  (Buddy-buddy system)..... Think, after a couple of months,  there where a few fellas that took the "buddy-buddy" thing a little toooo literally... but who am I to judge?

Now the basic body cean involved teeth / them-goolies / under the arms / and rinse socks...

You prayed like hell you got the sequence right.....

After 7 days out, we sent grid reference, chopper's cam, next lot dropped off and we where choppered back to base for (I think it was 14 days)?

Anyhow, it was one of those "time for us to be choppered back" events when I earned my stars & stripes.

See I was the operational signaller, and the radio was the B25 So I threw the diapole antenna, and when I tuned the radio, it would not tune in on the frequency, the battery and the spare wher flat, even though I connected tem with that field telephone cable (don 10)

But I also knew that the battery in the little FM radio's (think they where serialised as A52 & A53's... They where white and quite big, made by Eveready BTW) was exactly half the voltage as the B25. so I took the 2 spare batteries from those 2 radios, (one radio was with the lootie and the other was with the brenner) and connected them up and got the B25 to tune and got comms with Rundu to give position grid reference for withdrawal...

The story got round, and I became know as "Die seiner-boffin".... But that came with a curse....

Cause every time they thought it was a "hot-drop", I was "Volunteered" by the officer leading the drop / vehicle patrol....

Fortunately, I actually had very very little actual action, 99.99 % was running around chasing our tails........

OH! I had a girlfriend on the border! her name was Betsie..... Simply gorgous,  lean, a bit on the heavy side...... Had a rather hard butt that I used to rest my cheek against when I lined her up for  action.....

We had the most wonderful relationship..... I knew EXACTLY how to get her to pop, and the results where usually quite satisfying.....

Her family name was R1 !.... Anyone else have fun with any of her many sisters??????cheeky

SIGH......

<Lyrics>

Those......... Where..........The days my friend,

we thought they'd never end.........

Anyhow, I'm babbling on and on... Sometimes It's nice to open some of the draws in my archive cabinets of my memories....
