WARREN My funeral hearse...

Jozie
Submitted by TWTFAWC on

I’ve been watching the development of the Grenadier with a keen interest, because I’m sitting at 65 and my 4x4 is 20 years old, and whichever vehicle I choose, It’s more than likely going to be the last 4x4 I buy

So now the Grenadier has finally arrived, with the poverty spec coming in at 1.4 million and the “ANC National Executive Council” --- (NEC) spec  at 1.8million

Now I just don’t see any sense in spending that on a vehicle, even if it’s probably the most capable 4x4 available today....

Scratching round, a new 4x4 “poverty spec”  will cost around R500 K and when all’s  done and dusted probably here in the range of R750K – Again, I just can’t justify the expense

So what does that leave ?

Buy a younger second hand vehicle – There are risks involved IE what lies buried that’s going to go wrong----

Stick with what I’ve got, which is paid for and does the job pretty darn well, even though I’m not in love with the automatic transmission? --- seems like a plan ---

Problem is, spares are becoming difficult to get, and top of the list is gearbox / gearbox components... That’s the nigger-in-the-woodpile

After a lot of consideration I’ve decided to stick with what I have, but start to gather spares --- I reccon, If I get R50K’s worth of spares, I’m pretty much set till the end of my day’s, especially considering that I don’t have to dig out R50K at one time

So with that being the case, so far I’ve managed to get a complete 22E gearbox for R9000 ....

Think My hearse’s going to be a Landrover Discovery...

BTW The only chance of me having a "really hot body" is to be cremated..... Just saying

Spoke to a guy with a Ford 2,5d, I suppose about 15 years old? He needed a new water pump and radiator hoses, couldn't find any hoses and the water pump was really hard to get. The manufacture of the spares dries up after 10 years.

Bite the bullet and get that Grenadier. Work untill you are 70 to pay for it, and spend the next 10 years looking at it from your retirement home window. Bummer.

Who knows what the future will bring... It could be that I'm not able to go outdoors in 5 years time... Could be that I'll still be OK in 15 years... I dont think gambolling R500K or even worse 1.4 Large on a "who knows" is good sense.....

Nope I think, when the Landy's done I'll assess where I'm at and take it from there...

Perhaps it will be time to "put the things of my youth away" Who can tell

A functioning, serviceable, paid off vehicle is very difficult (and damn expensive) to replace. I’ll probably only get about R140k for my Everest, so I’d have to borrow about R600k to replace it with a new vehicle. That’s enough for about 150 000km’s diesel for my Everest at towing consumption. At that stage the Everest will have done almost 300 000km and will be ready to replace. It will however take me 18 years to drive 150 000km at the distance I do per year. Unless it dies before then, I’ll probably have to replace it in ten years in order to have five salaried years to pay for the replacement. Hopefully by then solar powered towing vehicles will be available. Buy a second Disco to keep for spares Warren.
