I’m in the beginning stages of putting a smaller / lightweight chuck-box/ camping kitchen together.
Mostly motivated because I’m itching to build that Vespa APE scooter delivery camper I was on about ---- Can’t get the vehicle yet but at least I can get all the other bits and pieces in the meantime
As a kitchen box, to store everything I have got me an aluminium cladded Christiansen tool suitcase that’s going to work out quite nicely
The key component of any chuck-box / camp kitchen is the cooker & the cookware – the rest is all logical, just lighter / smaller / multifunction
With that in mind I’ve based my new one around a Trangia model 25 camping cook-set, and a Trangia mini cook-set, (something like a 2 burner cooker) I’m aiming to be able to use as many different fuel sources as I can.
Some of the overseas people I communicate with on U-tube about Trangia cooking and stuff are quite interested – Unfortunately I can’t do the video thing – but that’s how it goes --- I’m technologically ignorant ----
For different fuel sources so far, I’m good for Meths (traditional Trangia burner) / solid fuel tablets (my adaptation) & remote gas canister fuelled burner (also my own adaptation) so that’s 3 of the 5 fuel types, the other 2 being organic (wood / charcoal, and Diesel / petrol)
And that’s where, bright eyed & bush tailed on Saturday morning I ran slap-bang into a brick wall....
They no longer import Trangia accessories, and at R15 to 1USD I’m definitely too poor to buy and import a multi-fuel burner attachment
All they have left is a couple of model 27 (smaller than the model 25) and a pot stand for the mini
I would have liked to get the strainer / cutting board but that’s gone by-by
So, I’m stuck with modifying or making the bits & pieces myself-------
Given my lack project execution skills --- This is no doubted-ly, going to prove somewhat challenging and the results ----- Well probably surprising
Mind you, I have gotten a couple of electric tools lately ---- A planner / drill press with 2 directional vice / an inverter welder (I can’t weld--- but I got one) and so on – so perhaps it won’t be a rough and ready as my other projects.
Anyhow, To practice cooking on a spirit burner, the other day I made 2 lekker common hamburgers ---- Pattie / cheese / egg / lettuce / tomato & sauce on buns with sesame seeds ---
Next up ---- mac & cheese
I’ll keep you updated as this goes along
Ek't so begin
50 odd years ago...
Had this exact bike ----
Shelter: - 1 groundsheet thrown over the bike, 1 swimming pool lilo for a matress next to the bike & a sleeping bag --- slept in my leather jacket & pants --- when it got cold I reached up & started the bike ---- warmed up under the tarp nicely...
My kitchen ? Matches / knife & fork / can opener --- that little tab one ----
My recovery gear - the bikes toolkit
Eating --- Any darn roadhouse on the way ---- Buy double, eat half, keep the rest for later
Water ---- Ex army waterbottle --- Filled at gararges ----
best darn trips I ever made --- whole of the Eastern TVL / The whole length of the East coast From Richards bay to Port Elazebeth and a hundred places around Transvaal from Warmbaths / suikerbosrand --- all over the place
Now? I'm too old for that --- but a vespa camper? daarvoor sien ek kans in my dotage---

Smaller chuck-box / camping kitchen
I’m in the beginning stages of putting a smaller / lightweight chuck-box/ camping kitchen together.
Does this mean the cadac cooker / lamp combo might be for sale soon?

Doubt it

At this point I,m keeping the Landy "as is" and I've also got this for a static set up
The Landy is getting long in the tooth, Being 20 years old and I'm lookin around at something else.
On the List - in no specific order is: - Toy cruiser / The new Grinadier (but the cost is probibly going to kill this difficult to justify 1.5 to 1.8 bar for a weekend jolly-patrollie bus) / Toy Prado /Mahindra ---- Sad to say I'm finally going to buy out of Landy, which has been like a golden thread throughout my life....
So anyhow back to "This"

Another brick in the wall
Got my "kitchen sink" yesterday --- A tupperware cake container that the Trangia fits into with some space to spare around it, but the lid closes just-just.........
Cost me R2 ------- For R2 I'm happy
Being a bit bigger in diameter (perhaps 100mm or so) means I can comfortably clean any of the pots that make up the cooker in it.
Not shure how much water I'll need per wash.
I checked out a collapsing bowl and that did not fit nicely.
So this weekend we had electricity problems, so I hauled out my Trangis & cooked supper on it --- So I wanted soup / and main course, and the burner ran out.. (it burnes for about 25 min) What I did was to light the burner form the mini Trangia & put it in the model 25, carried on cooking the empty burner then cooled down, Got filled and put into the 25, so that I could simmer my soup & it all worked out nicely, all my food, when plated, was hot.
But I learnt something, A secondry burner for long cooking meals is jolly useful, so I'll be adding a spare burner that I've got lying around ...
Had to ask
Had to ask, one never knows......
Switching burners to cook sounds like too much work for a lazy person like me. 2 Minute noodles & tuna or Bully Beef will have to do for a quick meal when not braaiing.
That said, we actually use the gas oven quite a lot when camping, but we are not trying to camp minimalistic either.
How much water per wash? - no idea, but you will figure that out soon enough i suspect.
Not really
Hi P
6 laid back, easy steps
Light second burner /Pot off / remove finished burner with tongs / put lit one in / pot on / wait for burner to cool & fill with 10 % water 90 % spirits --- Stops blackening of the bottom of the pot
Are you familiar with the Trangia ?
Ok simple meals
pasta & sauce is great / braai up a steak & boil up a small PKT of mixed veggies ALT chuck about 4 or 5 small potatoes in a pot /
Just not bully -- had so much of it in the army ---
But I rather like getting a nice meal on the go---- I think cooking's one of those very relaxing camping activities, to be done with a good book in hand --- Never approached it ilke ahef in the kitchen of a resturaunt / supper for 5 after work type of thing
Pull the pork belly out the freezer, gives smul-lekker anticipation .... Veggies in the Cobb, crack a Black to pour in the moat, belly on the grid close up ----- go fishing
That's my style ....
Dish washing --- Can get away with about 1 - 2 L & a good dry off.
