Roadside camping my 10 year old lightbulb moment

Following my post "changed times and camping" I've suddenly rememebered an idea I once had, it's related to roadside camping, but I think it's worth its own thread....

Roadside camping......

What if some of the ground at EG Ultra City's & the like was utilised only for caravanner's & campers?

Most of the infrustructure is there already.... 24H shop, Steers / Wimpy, staff and so on...

And they have to maintain the grounds anyway.

Why not fence off a portion, say for maximum 5 stands build a basic ablution facility, one water tap, and the camper pays by the hour for the use thereof?

No braai / electricity / dishwashing........... Nothing fancy... It's a stop over.... Just a good secure perimeter, a gated entrance and a flat place to park & down steadies....

So, if you get there at 20:00 and you want to leave by 06:00 then you only pay for 10H

The gararge gains by additional sales of fuel / shop & and eat at Wimpy - Steers as well as for use of the ground....

Give a deposit till slip gives entry time, present slip & collect the balance when you leave.... Maximum stay is 12H.....

What you clever fellas think of my little lightbulb moment?

Warren there are many stop over parks spread throughout  the country already, some very nice and some very basic. Most of them situated on a farm just outside a town.

I for one will not sleep over at a one stop, can you imagine the noise when big trucks pull in there at night, and the noise from cars and trucks passing on the highway.

We became friends with an elderly couple who has been camping full time, both in their 80 ties who sleep over at the normal parking areas at One Stops, they have never been asked to pack up and go. But they do admit the noise is terrible.

So to answer your question, I do not think much of your light bulb moment, sorrycrying

Warren what you suggested i put in a tread earlier that is what i do .Okay the noise of the trucks and cars do make for a sleepness night but i am save and as you mentioned most of these places have 24h shops so easy peazy hot coffee when you wake up even a crusty pie that ends with a severe heartburn for the rest of the trip . I just wonder how many people will make use of this kind of facility should it become a reality . I will give 8/10 for the suggestion Warren devil

Hi Dassie

I think, depending on where such a stop-over is situated at the Ultra ETC, an 8ft wall would do much to decrease the noise, if there would be a noise problem

I’m surprised that noise is a problem given how much truck / traffic noise there is at Warmbaths yet campers go there and pay ridiculous money.

So let’s do the math...

Potentially, 6h stop over = R300 * 5 sites = R1500 / day * 20 days (avr) = potentially R30 000

Lot’s of camper’s have to stop over somewhere because of many different reasons... Could only leave home late / going far / sightseeing on the way makes you late and so on, even breakdowns.

Then you have the touring campers / the pensioner campers... And dumb-dumb’s like me...

In the old days, there where the municipal parks... And everyone knew where they where and they where well signposted.... Heck, every garage joggie knew where they where

Today they don’t exist... Nothing’s taken their place.

Those “boutique “ campsites?  The general traveller does not know where they are....

Pretty grim trying to find one and landing up down a dead end streetwith your 200 ton exclusive on the back...

With this scheme, everybody will know where they can lay-by, And I think, with time is could just perhaps take off...

Warren i am with you on this one .Like i said i have been doing this Ultra City stops for the last few years now and touch wood have never been chased away or harrassed .I usually talk with the main dude there and ask him to show me where to stop and give him some cold drink money and ask to keep an eye out for me .The plus side they have ablutions ,a 24 hour shop with foods and hot coffee . I wonder how long it will take before these Ultra City garages will realize that there is money to be made from this venture .

Warren, I think that could work, provided they don't over charge. Why don't you try the idea with eg Shell, or Caltex.

I am sure, if the dapital outlay isn't to high, they might just considder it.

This reminded me of my overnight stop @ one of these 24H roadside garages in 1993 when I moved from Durban to Pretoria.

Loaded some stuff in the kombi and hit the road at about 10 pm. The kombi had a back-yard 3.0 litre ford engine conversion done resulting in some overheating when working hard over long periods. Travelling at night was my solution for this problem.

Going was slow and around 3 am I pulled over at the garage to rest. I think it was around Villiers somewhere and it was getting cold. The 2nd row passenger seats were turned around facing the 3rd row creating a very comfortable bed at the back. All I could find to use to keep warm while trying to sleep in the back were 2 kudu hides.

I soon fell asleep and only woke up after sunrise with other travellers already arriving for a break. It was quite funny to see the look on their faces when i got out of the kombi and rolled my “blankets” carefully before getting back in the driver`s seat. I always wonder what they were thinking about this weird guy sleeping in his kombi and using hides -from animals which he probably hunted himself at some stage- for blankets. I must have looked like some modern bushman to them.

Kombi sold long ago but i still dream of traveling through SA like that again one day......

Hi Pieter, your story reminds me of my wife and I, shortly after we got engaged on a trip to the West Coast.

Our overnight stop was also in the back of my VW van where we made a bed and stopped at the shell stop just before Kimberley.

Hopelik eendag sal ek en sy weer so 'n light weigt road trip doen smiley

Morning Pieterc... Welcome to this Particular Picnic Place...

Your story resonates with me so many times.... Moer often than I care to try and remember,  I've slept over at that gararge near the Mooiriver toll plaza....

I also had a Kombi... Bay window but with the double opening door on the side....

Gave it the name Granny Grundle

One easter took my Son rubber ducking at the Vaal dam...

He was about 16 then, so that would have been around 20???? years ago

When we got there in the early morning the entire dam was covered in mist. Say's I to him.... Let's go to St Lucia......

We also slept anywhere and everywhere. Went to St Lucia, popped in at Durbs, then came back to Gangsters...

I will never ever pay toll fees, so I bumble along the 101... But anyhow....

Johan.....

My Idea............And therein lies the rub..... What's in it for me? Give them the jolly idea, they run with it........And Me?

As per the example I gave, Without actually doing a due-dillagence, broadly the maths looks OK,

(if advertised with their pre-holiday advertising runs) Return on investment on start-up would probibly be 12 months, from then it's then it's profit - a very small amount of additional expense, and once one Franchise adopts the scheme, pretty much the other's would have to follow...

If you just take the number of caravanner's that go to the lower South Coast.. That's over 700Km's.

at an AVERAGE travelling speed while towing, of +- 75 Km that would mean a travelling time of some 9 - 10H....That's beginning to get most unpleasent...

However, spilt that into 60 - 40

thats a first leg of 6H...

Sleep in, leave at 09:00 Stop relax for Re start at 06:00 then a second hop of 4H and you are at your destination at 10:00 or so, a lekker amount of time to settle down, set pitch, and go visit the sea, and plenty of "buffer time"for those unexpected delays.... Like ques at the toll gates...

But Jaaaa.. The rub... How do I gain from it?..... That's why It's a 10 year old idea....
