Wika towbar luggage box / carrier for my Landy

I thought to take this off the Kalagadi thread and make a thread on it's own, so I'm copy pasting all this into one post

I note that nobody actually has spoken about this, so I'm assuming nobody's actually got one, and I have never used one, so I think there might be a tiny bit of information value to add to the forum about them.

So just to refresh, the carrier I'm talking about is very similar to the one in the pic.

Beginning preperation - planning to visit the kalagadi during December (only a few months away), On Friday 12-06-2020 I went to view one, with a view to: -

1) Taking some of the gear out from inside my Landy & rather store things like camping chair / brand-hout / chaka / diswashing basins and stuff like that there,

2) Getting shot of the rather ugly spare wheel "buddy bag" that I currently use to store my roadside shower kit, guy-ropes & pegs for my awning, and some other odds and sods....

3) At a future trip, putting my bicycle on there (Neef & Arrie advise that a bicycle is not a good idea for the Kagaladi) , although, like when I did the 10 ECO passes challenge at Orania / Lady Grey / Rhodes &  Mac clear, I may also want to tour around some of the teeny-tiny dorpies along the way.... we'll see, the jury's still out on that one.

Anyhow, for it to be of any use to me I would need to have it swing out, as I basically do all the domestic stuff at the back door, so I would need to be able to open the back door, so I had a plan to fabricate a swing -out bracket that would fit in the towbar reciever.

Scratch all of that, Yesterday (Wednesday) I went to the shop to negotiate the price & look again, It is brand new (only used 4 or 5 times) and here is the punch-line: -

It belonged to the shop owner, and he bought a swing out bracket for it when he used to use it.

BINGO! no nothing I have to fabricate, it bolts straight on, and plugs into the trailer light coupling.

I'll  have to get one of those coiling wiring extention things for when I swing it out, I'll see.

Now we are up to currently.

Yesterday, he lent me the bracket to go and see if it fit's on the Landy, and most importantly, when the bracket is open, the back door will clear the box and open all the way, and yes it does!

On top of all of the benifits, It makes a real handy table top at the back where I do all the domestic stuff like cooking / dishwashing / ETC, so the long and the short of this is I'm going to go and buy it and go from there.

The only downside is it's color (white)....  gotta do something about that as well...

Now I took pics of it but for some reason my tablet won't link to my PC.......

Going forward, because I've not seen any discussion regarding these carriers, my plan is to add to this discussion about these carriers as I progress from here..... Get it mounted.... Pre-tested.... And finally, how it shaped up for my in the Kagaladie in December, just for in-case, in the future, another member needs info on one of these...

I bought it. R5000 out the shop.

The wiring cable is long enough to accomodate the swing out, but, strangely it is not bolted to the bracket.... There's a bit of stiff drilling to be done through the thick plates!

Seems it is the same as the one in the pic.

I haven’t used one of these but just make sure it’s mounting is sturdy. The roads in Kgalagadi tend to be badly corrugated. I don’t know what your suspension is like, but that far behind the rear axle there is bound to be a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on.

Hi Arrie

Sorry if I mis- directed you fellas, IF..... and a big IF..... I did take a bicycle with to the Richtersveldt, I have no intention of using  it there, but If I go dorp-cruiping on the way there it might be nice to have to explore some of the little towns , which might be “sort of along the way”  or "on the way there"...

When I did the passes adventure, I took the bike with, but didn't  use it on the passes..... I used it  at Orania / Lady grey and so on.... Park the bus, get on the bike, go tootling around.... Nice

I haven’t got that far in my planning to look at road-maps and stuff yet, so I don't even know what dorpies are in that direction.....

For now all I’ve got so far is a lekker luggage box for the back, which is intended as a permanent addition to my 4x4 roadside camper.... & I can (if I wanted to) mount a proper horisontal bike rack horisontally ontop of it...

make sense now....?

Brits.... No... been there so often, my platkar knows how to get there all on it's own..... cheeky

Yes well that was a bit of a surprize... The box is not fastened to the bracketing! So I'll be drilling a hole and fastening it trust me!

The box has a steel frame that extends from the mount to the four corner's and for about 3/4 up the corners, and is encased in fiberglass...

I believe it's sturdy enough, I've ditched the air suspension and have tera-firma coils at the back... I'm guessing that with a bit sofetr air pressure in the tyres I should be good-to-go... I don't drive fast.... At my age it's too darn risky.....

Ok blush.. blushsomewhere I got Kgalagadi into this little lot, thanks for pointing that out....

Richtersveldt... The blooming Richtersveldt... See, that's why the Landy's called thewherethefuckarewecar.... Quite possable that I'll head off for the Richters and land up in Kgalagadi....

Won't be the first time....

Ask my son....

When he was about 15 or so, and I was still the "appel of his eye" we started out for the Vaal dam with the rubber duck and stopped in Sordwana.....

True story.....laugh

A very nice luggage box Warren.  yes    It was good seeing you again today

And likewise Anton, very pleasant surprise indeed, thank you.

I assembled the box and the swing-out bracket onto the towbar, and most important the back door clears.

However, when I swing the carrier out it hangs down at quite an angle, and like that I can't use it for a table. The problem is in the hinge pin, there is too much torsional force created by the weight with the box swung out.

But it can be fixed. I anticipated something of that nature in my design, and designed mine so that the arm that swings out "rests" on a supporting plate, so that the force is not born by only the hinge-pin but is carried by a thick supporting plate.

There are a few other mods that I will do that will improve the strength & ridigity of the box, both against the back of the landy and when swung out.

But I conceed, the bracket does not give me a sense of "dis nou moer sterk", so, given your advice, I probibly won't use it to go to Richters....

I'll do photo's sometime.

It's probibly lighter that before I re-configured....

I took out all the seats in the back, 2 "jump" seats and the bench seat.... Gosh those things weigh a ton!

I'm actually not adding anything, I'm just putting what's already there in a better place...

Morning Warren, I was pulling your leg 😂

I do realise that those seats are very heavy, my car is a 8 searter, and the small, middel seat alone weiths a ton. I only put it back in the car when really need it, it is stored in a blanket in the outside store.

So..... back to this topic

Ok, so I won't use it wen I go to Richters, but I will still use it when I dorp-cruip or go on road trips ETC, still makes a jolly good space to re-organise.

Not the heavy stuff, things like the "buddy bag" <for my shower kit> on my spare wheel which really looks ugly, my chair which is stored on my bed, and adds to complicating switching-over from driving to sleeping, and so on... I still think a Bicycle is useful, especially when I go dorp-cruiping....

OK, so I admit, the swing-out bracket I bought needs to be beefed up & some suppoert plates welded on, so that when it's "swung-out" it hangs straight.... I think I discussed that.....

And so to THIS post.... Bearing that in mind, I scrounged round in my friend's scrap yard and found 2 complete universal, towbar mount spare wheel carriers!

Both of them are one hell of a lot beefier & better made than the original bracket.

One of them is almost an exact fit, the other (the nicer one) would need some work

Both of them cost me R320 bucks at scrap value!

NOW THAT'S ONE HELLAVA SWEET DEAL laugh

So, the one I'll use, the other I'll sell! Those sparewheel brackets cost around R3000 a pop!

Apparantly the manufacturer gave up trying to do business in SA after this last round of load-shedding...Sticker's on there, just can't remember the name...

So, here is the thing... I could move the spare-wheel off the door, <which is a good thing> or I could look to use the bracket for the spare wheel to clamp the bicycle!!!

Coooool!

EDIT

Picture of what I'm selling... This exact same thing.

Called in, they are still making brackets (seems my pal at the scrapyard is wrong), no matter new it costs R5800 VAT INCL, so if somebody wants, make me a reasonable offer

p''l;ó

Warren daai Landy is reg soos n roer geniet waar jy ook al gaan met hom

Dankie sleep...

I'm busy with 2 projects, refreshing my cottage at the house (which came to a grinding halt when I got the C19) and this one.

Refreshing my cottage, is higer on the list than the carrier, and re-starts this weekend....

Non the less I've been spending a little bit of time planning the bracket and I'm convinced I can make the new bracket hold a bicycle as well...

BTW... Just a word of caution about getting the C19.... Don't for one moment think that because you are not infectious anymore you are OK.....

Yesterday, was the first time that I could breath deeply without feeling like my chest was being held by a broad stretchable band.....

Watch out mense.... This thing is no joke....

Like I said: - The contact trace was from an emloyee, who became ill, told nobody, and still came to work for 3 day's (he needed the money) until he was that sick he stayed off work

he took out 7 of us, fortunately all 7 of us are OK....

I’m glad to hear that you have recovered Warren! How long were you sick for?

All told a month.... A week for it to develop, 2 weeks of sick and toget get back on my feet and about 10 days for this "tightness" to go away...
