Lae strek ratkas

Brits
Submitted by wessels on
Groete

Bells is nie genoeg nie.

Groete

Hi Warren

I am totally in the dark when it comes to the 4x4 fraternity, and fine detail in that regard.

I will koekeloer tonight my neighbour's Hilux, a 2017 model 2.8 with 4x4 option, to check for the free wheel hub knob.

Wessels, its a thing that looks like this: -

And is on the front wheel hubs < both sides> It disconnects the front drive shafts from the wheel, so when the wheel is turning, it is "reverse driving" the entire front drive chain.

When dis-engaged, only the front wheel turns, when engaged, the whole front drive train turns.

If you don't engage, and select low-range, the tranfer box <lae ratkas> will drive the front prop-shaft, which in turn drives the front differential, which in turn drives the 2 front sideshafts, but there will be no power on the wheels...

Warren, as I understand it it works like this:

When the transfer case is in 2H, the front prop shaft is in neutral and doesn’t get turned by the engine via the gearbox and transfer case. Freewheel hubs are meant to prevent the front wheels from turning the front half of the drivetrain when the transfer case is in 2H and to prevent unnecessary wear and tear and wasting of fuel.
Current vehicles have auto locking hubs i.e auto freewheel hubs too. When in 2H the front wheels freewheel and in 4x4 they automatically lock to save you the hassle of getting out each time you engage or disengage 4x4. Correct me if I’m wrong.
As the 2014 article I posted earlier indicate even the Land Cruisers don’t have manual freewheel hubs anymore.

I read a thread on 4x4community now and it seems I was wrong. The old freewheel hubs did in fact freewheel. From what I could gather,  current part time 4x4’s front hubs are permanently engaged. That makes sense, because if the front part of the drivetrain wasn’t turning, you would strip the transfer case by putting it in 4H on the fly (like they all can do up to 100km/h nowadays). That is all except the Land Cruiser it seems. In 2016 they still had manually lockable front hubs. However, they automatically lock when left in the unlocked position if you switch to 4H and vice versa. You can still manually lock them, then they remain locked.

Well, don't beat yourself up about it, this is right! but now I've got to go and do some research, because this: -

Well this is new to me, but then I'm church-mouse poor (used to be bloody good looking & poor, now I'm just poor) and have to put up with a crotchety 2002 Landrover, that's perminently 4x4 with low range, and a thingie on the dash that tells you everything by going bing........bing......bing...... And a liggie that shines bright red (can't see what the little picture is, for that I need to put my eyes over my ears, and peer into the dash), but with my eyes over my ears........... I can't see where the hell I'm going, so that helps like a blooming hole-in-the-head........

Then to make things very, very, VERY interesting, has another knoppie called hill descent, which activates only after you have reached speeds down the flippin mountain pass (Ben-Mac-Duhi to be precise), that put the Starship Enterprise going into warp-speed to shame, with a hairpin bend approaching at the same warp-speed... And we ALL know Landrovers have a turning radius that's measured in kilometers..... Or like a rudderless oiltanker at full steam in the gulf of Mexico....

But what I DO know is cadence-braking.....

Like me, old school... It works.... And works well....... Like free-wheel hubs.... Old school.... It works... And works well laughlaugh

And now enough of the ramblings of a senile old fart.... Mense kla oor my laaaang postings....

For a moment I thought you hit a cyclist while in warp speed and sent him flying, then remembered that your grille is a bicycle rack.

The Prado also has DAC but it only works in low range and only if you don`t touch the brake pedal or accelerator. You can further control the descent speed  by selecting different gears - 1; 2; 3 or D.

Low gear (1st) in low-range is pretty slow but i don`t like the noise it makes when the brakes are applied to the wheels.  The actuator will brake the individual wheels as necessary - probably through the ABS system.

I have tried it once going down a totally washed away Sani Pass, but I prefer to do the braking or descent speed by manually applying brakes. I just feel more in control of the vehicle this way?

As with the diff-lock and low range i do activate them all once in a while just to keep all systems lubricated and moving.

Pieterc,

My sentiments exactly. HDC, for me is just a "safety-net". The technique of "cadence-braking"  is my first line of attack, with hill descent on, just incase things go wrong.

When I used to go and do 4x4 courses & obsticle traversing for fun, how to cadence brake was an important and often needed technique so I'm fine with that.

As I post, I'm not sure if the HDC on the disco will activate in high range, (I don't think so, but not sure) but anyhow that was all in low-range, gear-shift in first gear (can lock-the-box- in only 1; 2 or 3)  and the crawl-speed is awesome in first - low-range.

But when there is "wash-outs" / loose gravel / mud..... I like to do things very, very slowly, much slower than the speed at which the HDC kicks in.

Groete

Dis seker ‘n Unimog daardie Vorie?

Goeie genade, daar is genoeg kieries vir n Zoeloe Impi!

Die nuwe tegnologie soos ewenaarslotte en laestrek "on the fly" maak dinge darem baie makliker.
