WARREN Pariffine stove I know nothing about

Anyone here ever heard of a Caltex parrafine stove?

I've not fired it up yet, I have to replace the cork gasketts but the top round bit which is the tank twists round and by way of a heafty spring under the base it closes and opens the flame

I would imagne this would be from arond the 50's to the very early 60's

Anyone know anything --- Neef ? Willem ?

Anton please turn the photo's for me

Never seen one Warren. The burner looks similar to Primus stoves, but where is the tank filler and pump?

What is all the writing? looks like turn, fill, pressure?

You have my attention.

More Neef

This can only be made in SA ----

The filler cap (brass) is just under the black top & pot stand, and yes the writing is as follows

VUL < -------  DRAAI ---- >  BRAND   PRESSPAR GEBRUIK  (Caltex logo) CALTEX  TOWER LAMPOLIE

FILL < --- TURN ---- > BURN  PRESSPAR use (Caltex logo) CALTEX TOWER PARAFFINE

The burner

Cast is brass across the top on one axis HIPO LITE, the other axis is MADE IN PORTUGAL

You will have to fire it up and stand around the corner Warren, I guess it works similar to a petrol stove where the heat provides the pressure needed. But with Parrafin? that needs a moer of a heat to gassify

The way I think it works: -

Pressure (and flame intensity) is controlled by relieving pressure in the tank --- there is a big spring under the base and the tank turns in relation to the base – I think by turning the tank you allow pressure to escape and the flame will slow down.

There is no on / off valve like on an optimus

I think its a 2 stage process

1) Heat builds up pressure in the tank, which forces the parrafine up into the burner

2) In the burner the paraffin is super heated in tubes that drop down to the bottom of the other 2 tubes where the nozzle is – see pic?

But I’ve got to fix the seals first

SO BY THE WAY

I also recently got an Optimus 99 in 100 % working order.... Vintage 1975

Sounds a rough device. If you let the pressure escape underneath the burner, wont there be vapor that could ignite?

Maybe yours was designed in the 70"s by the military for use by the hammer and  sickle volunteers  ? ( cunningly disguised as a stove)

Ok so I think I have it a little wrong

When you fill it the tank is locked up tight against the base

When you  â€ťburn”  the tank ”separates” from the base

Seems to me, it works like a vacuum release, when you break the seal, the paraffin can flow up into the tubes of the burner, allowing it to jet like a primus stove.

Interesting indeed

I’ve popped an e-mail off to Calex----- let’s see what they say, if anything at all

It looks like a kerosene stove to me. My guess is that the diaphragm he's referring is in the upper fuel chamber. As you screw the top down the diaphragm is pushed up. This decreases the space in the fuel chamber and increases the pressure. It looks a little top heavy and unstable but it's an ingenious design.

Rubber seal in side, gets pushed up to increase pressure, by turning middle bit, I think that is a good idea, it must have some kind of worm screw inside, wont one, but not at the prices I have seem

Ok so that's from the American forum "Classic stoves" ----

I really really Like this particular comment :- wont (want) one, but not at the prices I have seem (seen) " !!!!! yes..laugh

My top is the same as the one in the video, not as per the picture Pieterc posted, so I think perhaps a younger version than his

Have a closer look Warren. It looks like the cast iron top is just held in place with some wire rings on top of the top that looks like yours. Maybe it was just an after market addition?

I haven't a looked @ the YouTube video yet, but sounds similar to the bladder system on some water pressure pumps.

It looks a little top heavy and unstable but it's an ingenious design.

I would say very top heavy and unstable, especially with a pot on the cooker!
